Discover Muskoka’s Winter Wonderland
Muskoka and Lake of Bays are beautiful regions in Ontario, Canada, with plenty of fun activities to enjoy with family and friends. Here are ten fun things to do in Muskoka and Lake of Bays this Family Day weekend:
Ice skating:
Lots of outdoor skating rinks throughout the area. Two of my favourites are Arrowhead Provincial Park Skating in Huntsville, where you skate through the beautiful Muskoka Forest backcountry and the Cranberry Ice Trail in Bala, where one skates the 1.2 km loop through acres of frozen cranberries. After your skate, warm up by the outdoor fire and enjoy mulled wine.
Snowshoeing
Explore the beautiful winter landscapes of Muskoka and Lake of Bays by snowshoeing on one of the many trails throughout the region.
Tobogganing
Find a hill and go tobogganing, one of the most classic winter activities!
Ice fishing
If you’re into fishing, try your luck at ice fishing. Many lakes in Muskoka are open for ice fishing and offer beautiful views. Plus, this family day weekend, licenses are free for ice fishing.
Skiing and snowboarding
Hit the slopes at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area, which offers trails for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.
Visit the Muskoka Lakes Winery
On your own without the kids? Enjoy a wine tasting and tour at the Muskoka Lakes Winery, which specializes in fruit wines made from local berries.
Dog sledding
Experience the thrill of dog sledding with companies like North Ridge Ranch, which offers tours in the beautiful Muskoka winter scenery.
Visit the Sugarbush Hill Maple Farm
Take a tour of the sugarbush, see how maple syrup is made, and sample some of the delicious syrup products.
Snowmobiling
With 1,600 kms of scenic trails, Muskoka is known as a great snowmobile destination and there are several businesses that rent machines and offer guided tours. Rent a machine from Lake of Bays Marina and explore Lake of Bays and the villages of Bayville, Dorset, and Dwight.
Cross-country skiing
Take a leisurely ski on one of the many cross-country ski trails in the region. Arrowhead Provincial Park and Algonquin Park both offer groomed trails for skiers of all levels.
