Almaguin Highlands

Welcome to Almaguin

A short drive north of Muskoka lies a vast expanse of unspoiled Canadian wilderness known as the Almaguin Highlands. This region is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with an abundance of lakes, rocks, and forests that provide endless opportunities for adventure. From cycling and paddling to fishing and hiking, Almaguin has it all.

The Villages of Almaguin are scattered throughout this breathtaking landscape, each one bursting with creativity and a passion for the natural beauty that surrounds them. These charming and welcoming communities are the perfect base for exploring the area, and their close proximity to Algonquin Provincial Park makes them a popular destination for visitors from around the world.

Covering approximately 5,200 square kilometers, the Almaguin Highlands are located in the eastern half of Parry Sound District. The region is bordered by Muskoka to the south and Nipissing District to the north, with the eastern edge abutting the western boundary of Algonquin Provincial Park. The western boundary of the Almaguin Highlands is generally regarded to be the mid-east-west point of Parry Sound District. The name “Almaguin” is derived from the words Algonquin, Magnetawan, and Sequin, reflecting the area’s rich indigenous and settler history.

If you’re looking to explore the Almaguin Highlands, there are plenty of hiking trails to choose from. Head to South River to enjoy a leisurely stroll through Tom Thomson Park, named after the iconic Canadian artist who often used the village as a jumping-off point for his adventures into Algonquin Park. The Forgotten Trails system maintains several hiking trails around South River catering to all fitness levels. Burk’s Falls offers the Heritage River Walk Trail, while Powassan’s Pines Interpretive Trail climbs through towering red pines to end in a spectacular lookout.

For a family-friendly adventure, check out Magnetawan Park and walking trails, or take in the views of Sundridge’s Bernard Lake (North America’s largest lake without an island!) from High Rock Lookout Park and Trails. Just outside of Emsdale, Brook’s Falls offers a hiking trail with exciting views as the rushing water cascades over twisting outcrops of bare granite. Paddlers will also want to check out the Magnetawan River for a day trip out to explore this stunning waterway.

With its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, the Almaguin Highlands is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the best of Ontario’s wilderness. Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or just looking for a peaceful escape from the city, the Villages of Almaguin and the surrounding area offer something for everyone.
