Winter Wonderland – Lake of Bays
Winter finally decided to visit Lake of Bays. Yesterday, I was at my office in Dwight when the snow started to fall – chunky, thick, heavy, white flakes. By the time I left the office and started heading home on South Portage Road visibility was poor but as I passed Marina Road and came to the South Portage dock, ten snowmobiles had stopped for a breather. They had come from Deerhurst Resort, across Peninsula Lake and through the Portage Flyer trail on route to Dorset on the southeast side of Lake of Bays. Snowmobilers have been anxiously awaiting good conditions with lots of snow for the trails and frozen lakes. This weekend promised perfect circumstances for all outdoor sports – snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. The snow continued through the night and by 4 pm today about 19 cm (or 7.5 inches) of feathery white snow blankets us. A winter wonderland. So still and lovely – I think of Robert Frost’s poem “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening”… surely he was thinking of Lake of Bays when he wrote that. How lucky we are to live in this beautiful northern region.
